Rust protection guide

Why Capital Region Winters Are So Hard on Truck and SUV Frames

If you drive a truck or SUV around Albany, Schenectady or Troy, your frame is spending four or five months a year in salty slush. Most people never see it, which is exactly why frame rust is so expensive: by the time it shows, it has been working for years.

What actually attacks your frame

It isn't snow. It's the chemicals on the road and the water that carries them into places they can't escape.

  • Road salt and brine, which are heavily used on the Northway, the Thruway and I-787
  • Slush that packs into boxed frame sections and wheel wells
  • Stone chips that expose bare steel under the paint
  • Bolt-on parts like hitches, receivers and skid plates that create salt traps

Why freeze-thaw makes it worse

The Capital Region swings above and below freezing many times in a winter. On a mild afternoon, salty meltwater runs into every seam and weld. When it refreezes overnight, it expands and pries at paint and any hard coating over it. Repeat that dozens of times and a protective layer that looked fine in November is cracked by February.

What oil undercoating does about it

A wool wax or Fluid Film-style oil film doesn't dry into a rigid shell, so there is nothing for freeze-thaw to crack. The oil creeps into seams and joints, displaces moisture, and flows back over small scratches. It slows corrosion by keeping water, salt and oxygen away from the steel.

What it doesn't do

Oil doesn't turn rusty steel into new steel, and it isn't permanent. Plan on a refresh about once a year, ideally in fall. If your frame is already flaking in layers or has holes, it needs repair before any coating can help. A good installer will tell you that up front.

A simple fall routine

  1. Rinse the underbody in early fall to remove summer mud and last winter's salt residue.
  2. Look at the frame, brake lines and hitch for flaking, bubbling or fresh rust.
  3. Get oil applied while the frame is dry, before the first road treatments.
  4. Plan a spring rinse to wash off the salt that built up over winter.

Do those four things every year and your frame will be in far better shape in five years than one that just got driven hard and put away wet.
